Hi, I’m James!

I'm James Hines and I LOVE American history and government! I've been a Master Teacher, Department Chair, and Teacher Specialist in secondary social studies for over 20 years.

For Motivating Tutors, I'm happy that I'll be teaching my specialty, AP American History and American Government.

It's never been more important than now, in a rather politcally turbulent time, to understand the historical context in which current events are taking place. I'll be excited to help you gain perspective and insight as together we look at our country's amazing history and the evolution of our government.

I have lots of experience with online teaching. In the past year I have helped to structure a virtual learning program for our county. So no worries on the technical aspects of online learning!

Bio

James' love of history blossomed growing up in the rural town of Keedysville, Maryland, near Sharpsburg and Boonesboro, where he was surrounded by the ghosts of the bloodiest battle of the Civil War- the Battle of Antietam. For three years after high school James traveled across the US searching for his passion in life, all the while continuing to read and research historical accounts. After his journey he entered Shepherd University where he earned a bachelor's degree in Secondary Social Studies Education in 2000. He then embarked on a long and distinguished career in the Frederick County, Maryland public school system.

James was quickly recruited into curriculum writing and new teacher mentoring. Within four years he was appointed a Social Studies Department Chair and began presenting social studies lessons to Middle School teachers county-wide.

In 2012 James began teaching high school AP US History and American Studies II at Linganore High School. He subsequently led AP workshops for teachers county-wide and was recruited to present AP US History lessons to teachers in adjacent Anne Arundel County. His service culminated in being appointed Master Teacher for Secondary Social Studies.

Since 2017 James has served as the Teacher Specialist in Secondary Social Studies for Frederick County Public Schools. providing support to social studies teachers county-wide.
